Food Banks see huge increase in clients
Food bank officials said they're seeing people in their food lines they haven't seen before, people who suddenly are struggling to buy life's essentials. They need help to feed their families while they try to recover from a job loss or house foreclosure. Many are simply trying to cope with higher gas and food prices, which have risen along with higher energy prices. For some, having their kids home for the summer has been the breaking point. Families used to having their children receive subsidized breakfasts and lunches at school are now scrambling to provide the extra meals at home. It happens every summer but on top of everything else, it's worse this year.
"Everything is going up - rent, food, gas," said Maria Ramirez, 30. "But I can't give up. I have three girls." Read more...

Share Your Lunch Campaign 2008
Second Harvest's Share Your Lunch campaign has two objectives: 1) to feed children during the summer months when they do not receive free school meals and 2) to raise awareness of the pervasiveness of local childhood hunger.
